Genetics of Tanning in the Americas
This project investigated the genetic underpinnings of tanning and tanning persistence in Mexican Americans with a focus on the evolutionary history of this variation. This is the largest study to implement controlled exposures to UV and measure tanning persistence over four weeks. We have identified genes contributing to differential tanning intensity and persistence and showed that these genes have undergone selection uniquely in populations of the Americas.
